| Since the fluorine atom in tetrabutylammonium fluoride is a very strong hydrogen-bonded acceptor, it is highly susceptible to moisture absorption, and thus the product is usually sold as a compound of tetrabutylammonium fluoride trihydrate or a solution of tetrabutylammonium fluoride tetrahydrofuran. When heated to 77°C under vacuum, the compound decomposes to the hydrofluoride salt, and when the sample is dried at 40°C under high vacuum, 10-30 mol% water content and 10% difluoride salt are still obtained. | |||||||||

Tetrabutylammonium fluoride is widely used in the field of organic synthesis, it can be used as fluoride reagent, catalyst for silylation of alcohols, phase transfer catalyst and so on.
This product is white solid, extremely hygroscopic. The melting point of crystals containing 18H2O is 37℃.
It is used as fluorinating agent in organic synthesis, catalyst for silylation of alcohols, alkaline reagent in alkylation reaction and hydroxylation reaction.
Good cationic phase transfer catalyst.
Used as catalyst for acylation, silylation and silyl ether decomposition.
