Sodium thiocyanate, also known as sodium cyanosulfide, has the structural formula Na—S—C≡N. It is produced by reacting sodium cyanide with sulfur or as a byproduct of coke oven gas desulfurization. Its chemical formula is NaSCN, with a molecular weight of 81.07. It appears as a white crystalline powder that readily absorbs moisture in air. The product containing two molecules of crystallization water forms white needle-like crystals. Its relative density is 1.735. Melting point: 287°C. Refractive index: 1.625. Soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, and other solvents. Its aqueous solution is neutral. Reacts with iron salts to form blood-red ferric thiocyanate; does not react with ferrous salts. Toxic. Store and transport in moisture-proof conditions. Used as a solvent for polyacrylonitrile fiber spinning, a developing agent for color motion picture film, and a chemical analysis reagent.
