| At room temperature, it appears as a white granular powder with a sulfur dioxide odor. It is stable when dry but sensitive to moisture. Soluble in water and glycerol, it is insoluble in ethanol. Its aqueous solution is alkaline, turning litmus and phenolphthalein paper alkaline. It reacts with acids to produce toxic sulfur dioxide gas. A 1% aqueous solution has a pH of 8.3–9.4 and exhibits strong reducing properties. | |||||||||
