Methylanthracene is a homologous compound of naphthalene in which one hydrogen atom on the naphthalene ring is replaced by a methyl group. It is one of the products obtained from the processing of high-temperature coal tar. It has two isomers, namely 1-methylanthracene (also known as α-methylanthracene) and 2-methylanthracene (also known as β-methylanthracene). It is mainly obtained through distillation separation from coal tar and certain by-products in the petroleum processing process. It can be used as raw materials for industries such as chemical engineering, medicine, and dyes. Among them, 1-methylanthracene has good solubility for organic substances and can be used as a carrier for dyeing and as a solvent for pesticides and anti-rat poison, etc. The mixture of 80% 1-methylanthracene and 20% 2-methylanthracene is a low eutectic substance with a freezing point of -48℃, which can be used as a heat carrier and solvent. 1-methylanthracene can also be used as a standard fuel for measuring the cetane number of diesel and a reagent for determining the theoretical plate number of distillation towers. 2-methylanthracene can be used as an impregnating agent, a lubricant flow point reducer, and a solvent, and can also be used to produce feed additives, etc.
