1. Product Overview
Silicone oil — polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS, dimethicone) — is a clear, odorless, chemically inert synthetic oil built on a silicon–oxygen backbone. It combines the widest service-temperature range of any commercial fluid (−40 to +200 °C), extremely low surface tension, high electrical insulation and complete water repellency, properties that no hydrocarbon oil can match in combination.
That unique property set has made silicone oil a silent workhorse across industry: it is the benchmark defoamer of fermentation, textile, paper, water-treatment and food processes; the release agent of rubber, plastics and die-casting molds; the conditioning emollient (INCI: Dimethicone) of shampoos, skin care and sunscreens; and the lubricant, damping fluid and insulating oil of precision and electrical equipment. One polymer family, one of the most versatile liquids in commerce.
A single fluid, four core value propositions:
Defoaming & Antifoaming:
● the benchmark defoamer across fermentation, textile, paper, water treatment, food and coatings;
Release & Processing Aids:
● a clean release agent and processing aid for rubber, plastics, casting and molding;
Personal Care & Cosmetics:
● the conditioning and film-forming emollient (Dimethicone) of hair, skin and sun-care products;
Lubrication, Insulation & Specialty Fluids:
● a high-temperature lubricant, insulating/damping fluid and specialty process oil.

3. Chemistry & Structure
PDMS is built from repeating dimethylsiloxane units — a silicon–oxygen backbone with two methyl groups on each silicon: [Si(CH₃)₂O]ₙ. The strong Si–O bond gives outstanding thermal and oxidative stability; the methyl groups create a hydrophobic, low-surface-energy surface (surface tension ≈ 20 mN/m); and the flexible backbone stays fluid to very low temperatures. The result is a liquid that is simultaneously heat-stable, cold-flexible, water-repellent, electrically insulating and chemically inert.
Commercial silicone oil is classified by kinematic viscosity (10 to over 100,000 cSt at 25 °C), which corresponds to molecular weight and is the key selection parameter: low viscosity for defoaming, spreading and cosmetics; medium for release and lubrication; high for damping, insulation and heavy-duty service. Food, cosmetic and industrial grades differ in purity and compliance, all documented on the COA.
4. Key Features & Benefits
● Extreme temperature range: stable from −50 to +200 °C+ — unmatched by hydrocarbon oils.
● Ultra-low surface tension: spreads and defoams with exceptional efficiency at minimal dosage.
● Chemical inertness: non-reactive, non-toxic and non-flammable — safe in food, pharma and electronics service.
● Excellent electrical insulation: a dielectric fluid for transformers, capacitors and electronic protection.
● Strong water repellency: hydrophobic films protect fabrics, leather, metals and surfaces.
● Broad viscosity range: 10 – 100,000+ cSt matches the fluid to any application.
● Multi-industry reach: one fluid serving food, cosmetics, textiles, electronics, energy and precision engineering.
5. Main Applications
5.1 Defoaming & Antifoaming (Core Application)
Silicone oil is the world's benchmark defoamer:
● Industrial fermentation: amino-acid and enzyme production;
● Textile and dyeing: defoamer and leveling aid in dye baths and finishing;
● Paper and pulp: foam control in pulping, coating and paper-machine systems;
● Water treatment and detergents: foam suppression in wastewater, cleaning and washing processes;
● Food, sugar, coatings and oilfield: defoaming across food processing, sugar refining, paints and drilling fluids.
5.2 Release & Processing Aids
● Rubber and plastics: mold-release agent with clean part release and surface finish;
● Die casting and molding: release and lubrication for metal and polymer processing;
● Textile processing: lubricant, softener and feel-improver for fibers and yarns;
● Polishes and protectants: gloss, water-repellency and anti-static effect in car and household care.
5.3 Personal Care & Cosmetics
● Hair care: conditioning, gloss and anti-frizz action in shampoos, conditioners and styling products;
● Skin care: silky emollient and barrier film in creams, lotions and serums;
● Sun care: film-forming, waterproofing enhancer in sunscreen formulations;
● Color cosmetics: smooth application and pigment dispersion in makeup.
5.4 Lubrication, Insulation & Specialty Fluids
● Precision lubrication: lubricant for instruments, bearings, gears and high/low-temperature service;

Silicone oil (PDMS, dimethicone) is used as the benchmark defoamer of fermentation, textile, paper, water-treatment and food processes; as a mold-release and processing aid; as the conditioning emollient of hair, skin and sun-care products; and as a high-temperature lubricant, insulating/damping fluid and waterproofing agent in industry.
Viscosity is the key selector: low grades (10 – 100 cSt) spread and defoam fastest and suit cosmetics and light lubrication; medium grades (100 – 1,000 cSt) serve release agents, polishes and general lubrication; high grades (1,000 – 100,000+ cSt) provide damping, insulation and heavy-duty service. Tell us your application and we will recommend the grade.
Mineral oil is cheap and adequate for ordinary lubrication, but silicone oil wins where conditions are extreme: it stays fluid far colder, remains stable far hotter, has much lower surface tension (better defoaming and spreading), resists oxidation and shear, repels water, and insulates electrically. The trade-off is cost — silicone oil is specified where its unique property combination earns its price.
Yes — PDMS is non-toxic, non-flammable and skin-friendly, and food and cosmetic grades are approved for their respective uses. The liquid can be slippery on floors, and high-viscosity grades can irritate eyes on direct contact. Use gloves for bulk handling and keep work areas clean. Food and cosmetic use must comply with the destination market's regulations.
