| Honokiol is an isomer of magnolol, a dimer formed by the polymerization of the side chain of one phenylpropanone and the benzene nucleus of another phenylpropanone, known as a neolignan. It is found abundantly in plants of the Lauraceae family and is the effective antibacterial and anti-inflammatory component of the traditional Chinese medicine Magnolia officinalis. Honokiol and magnolol are colorless needle-like crystals, sparingly soluble in water, but readily soluble in chloroform, benzene, ethanol, and caustic alkalis. Their physicochemical constants are: magnolol, mp: 102℃, UVλmaxEtOHnm(ε): 294 (8200); and magnolol, mp: 87.5℃, UVλmaxEtOHnm(ε): 294 nm (8200). | |||||||||
