| Ferrous sulfate monohydrate is a grayish-white to beige powder. It has an astringent taste. It is mainly composed of FeSO4H2O, with a small amount of FeSO44H2O. It is difficult to oxidize and is easier to store than crystalline ferrous sulfate. The aqueous solution is acidic and cloudy, gradually forming a yellowish-brown precipitate. It absorbs water in moist air to form a heptahydrate. It does not lose water when heated to 120°C. Boiling it with water will convert it to a basic sulfate. It dissolves slowly in cold water (26.6 g/100 ml, 20°C), but dissolves rapidly upon heating. It is insoluble in ethanol. It is almost insoluble in 50% sulfuric acid. | |||||||||
