Cysteamine CAS 60-23-1

Cysteamine, also known as 2-Aminoethanethiol, is an organic compound containing a thiol group (-SH). Its chemical formula is C₂H₇NS, molecular weight is 77.149, and CAS number is 60-23-1. The thiol group in its molecule is chemically reactive and easily oxidized to disulfides. It must be prepared and used immediately or stored as a hydrochloride salt, typically at 2–8°C in a light-protected environment. Its physicochemical properties include a density of approximately 1.0 g/cm³, a boiling point of approximately 133.6 °C, a melting point of 95 °C, and a flash point of approximately 34.6 °C. It appears as a white powder and is readily soluble in water and alcohol. This compound exists in a free state under alkaline conditions. Industrially, it is mainly prepared by the reaction of ethanolamine with hydrogen sulfide, the addition and subsequent cyclization hydrolysis of ethanolamine with hydrogen bromide, or the reduction of cysteine.
