Cresol, m/p-mixture (MP-cresol, CAS 84989-04-8) is the industrially standardized blend of meta- and para-cresol, supplied as a clear, colorless to light-yellow liquid at ≥ 99% purity. Because the mixture is liquid at room temperature and carries the strong antimicrobial activity of the cresol family, it is the classic preservative of injectable pharmaceutical formulations, used at 0.15 – 0.3% concentration.

MP-cresol is a defined mixture of the meta- and para-isomers of methylphenol (C₇H₈O). Unlike single isomers, the mixture stays liquid at ambient temperature (m-cresol melts at ≈ 11 °C; p-cresol at ≈ 35 °C — together they depress each other's freezing point), which makes it easy to pump, dose and formulate. Both isomers share the weak acidity and high ring reactivity of phenolics, so the mixture behaves predictably in preservation and synthesis.

MP-cresol is the m/p-isomer mixture of methylphenol. It is also used for cresol–formaldehyde resins, BHT-type antioxidants, agrochemicals, dyes, and fragrance intermediates such as vanillin and thymol.
Both are cresol blends, but they differ in composition: CAS 84989-04-8 is specifically the meta/para mixture (a stable liquid, standardized for preservation and fine chemistry), while CAS 1319-77-3 covers mixed isomers that typically also include o-cresol and are used mainly for resins and disinfectants. MP-cresol is the form preferred for pharmaceutical and fragrance applications, where o-cresol must be absent.
Like all cresols, MP-cresol is toxic by ingestion and skin contact, corrosive to skin and eyes, and irritating to the airways. Use impervious gloves, goggles and protective clothing, avoid skin contact and vapor inhalation, and handle only with adequate ventilation. It is an industrial chemical;
