| Chromium chloride, chemical formula CrCl₃. Molecular weight 158.36. Deep green crystalline powder. Soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, insoluble in ether. Forms a green solution after prolonged boiling with water. Decomposes upon heating. When heated in air, it converts to chromium trioxide. It sublimates in a chlorine gas stream. When heated with carbon tetrachloride at 400°C, it forms a kinetically inert purple anhydrous compound. The hexahydrate exists in three variants: deep green, light green, and purple. In aqueous solutions, it forms a mixture of deep green and purple, but in organic solvents such as DMSO, DMF, and ethanol, it appears dark green. | |||||||||
