Aluminium phosphate, also known as aluminium monophosphate, is an inorganic salt manufactured from aluminium and phosphoric acid. It is a major inorganic binder in the refractory and ceramics industry. Most often its chemical formula is written as:
AlPO4 (CAS number: 7784-30-7, EC number: 232-056-9, molecular weight ~121.95)
At room temperature, it is a white powdery solid (rhomboid platy crystals). Its natural mineral (berlinite) has the same hexagonal crystal structure as quartz. It has a melting point of more than 1500℃ and a density of about 2.566 g/cm3. Its refractive index is 1.546. Insoluble in water and alcohol, slightly soluble in hydrochloric and nitric acids. Aluminium phosphate has a high melting point, high thermal stability, good refractoriness and wear resistance. It is obtained industrially by reaction of aluminium salts with phosphates, or by acidification of sodium aluminate solution with concentrated phosphoric acid. It is also widely used as a colloidal hydrate (AlPO4.xH2O.
Aluminium phosphate has a structure based on aluminium ions (Al3+) and phosphate ions (PO43-). Its Al-OP framework has an isoelectronic similar structure as silicon dioxide (SiO2), so it has excellent high-temperature resistance, chemical stability and structural diversity: it is a strong binder at high temperature and also a molecular sieve framework with designable channels (AlPO4 molecular sieve series), so it is a multifunctional material of "high-temperature binding + catalytic support".
Aluminium phosphate is chemically stable, insoluble in water and alcohol, resistant to acid and alkali corrosion (slightly soluble in strong acids), does not decompose at high temperatures, has good compatibility with many inorganic materials, and is non-toxic and non-irritating. It should be stored in a sealed container, moisture-proof.
The product is categorised by application area, which generally includes: industrial grade (for industrial applications such as refractories, glass ceramics, catalyst supports, and coatings) and reagent grade (for laboratory use). The requirements for impurity control are different for different grades. The following indicators are especially noted:
1. Aluminium oxide (Al2O3)
Alumina content determines high-temperature performance and bonding strength, and together with phosphate content, is the core indicator of product composition.
2.P2O5 (phosphorus pentoxide) content
The content of phosphorus pentoxide is an indicator of the phosphate content, which influences the acidity and catalytic activity of the binder and must be strictly controlled.
3. Loss on ignition and moisture
Moisture impacts the formulation and shelf-life of binders. The loss on ignition shows the water of crystallisation and volatile components; both must be maintained within a reasonable range.
4. Fineness (residue on 325 mesh screen)
The fineness influences the dispersibility of the binder and the size of the coating particles and should be controlled depending on the application requirements and for batch-to-batch consistency.
5. Water insoluble matter and iron content
Water insoluble matter reflects the total load of impurities and the iron content influences the colour of product and performance of catalyst . Both of them should be controlled in a reasonable range .
Aluminium phosphate is used in many fields such as refractory materials, glass ceramics, petrochemicals, coatings, building materials, electronics, dentistry, and laboratories due to its unique properties of 'high melting point, high thermal stability, and Al-OP skeleton'. All of its applications are listed below by application area and product (nothing omitted):
1. Binder of refractory material (core industrial application in the area of refractory materials).
Aluminium phosphate is used as a binder in refractory bricks, refractory castables, ceramic fibre products and in lining of high temperature furnaces. Widely used in the electrical industry, high temperature furnaces, heat treatment furnaces and kiln equipment to enable refractory materials to retain their strength and integrity at high temperatures. It is one of the most important binders in refractory material field.
2.Glass flux (core industrial application in the glass industry)
Aluminium phosphate is employed as a flux in the production of speciality glasses to lower the glass's melting temperature and enhance its properties. It is used in the production of speciality glasses, opaque glasses and optical glasses.
3. Ceramic adhesives (industrial grade, ceramics industry)
Aluminium phosphate is used as a binder in ceramic bodies, glazes and ceramic products. It helps ceramic products retain strength during moulding and firing. It is widely used for ceramic tiles, sanitary ware and industrial ceramics.
4. Dental cement (industrial grade, in the dental field)
Aluminium phosphate is used as a component of dental cement (cementing agent) to help dental restorations (crowns, bridges) to bond to teeth and is one of the commonly used materials in dental restorative treatment.
5. Catalyst carrier (core industrial application, petrochemical industry)
Aluminium phosphate is used as a starting material for AlPO4 molecular sieve series and aluminium phosphate supports. It serves as a support for petrochemical catalysts and as a catalyst for reactions such as isomerisation and dehydration, thus improving the selectivity and yield of reactions. It is an important material in oil refining and chemical catalysis.
6. Pigments for rust prevention (industrial grade, coating industry)
Ultrafine aluminium phosphate (aluminium tripolyphosphate) is used as an anticorrosive pigment in anticorrosive paints. It helps to release the anti-rust groups with strong coordination ability and passivates the metal surfaces. It is widely used as an anti-rust primer for steel structures, cars and ships.
7.Fire retardant coatings and fire retardant textiles (industrial grade fire protection and flame retardant applications)
Aluminium phosphate is used as flame retardant in fire retardant coatings and fire retardant textiles to improve the flame resistance and fire rating of materials. It is widely used in fire-retardant coatings, fire-retardant fabrics, and flame-retardant products for buildings.
