What is levopropionic acid? What are its industrial applications?

1. What is Levulinic acid?

Levulinic acid, also known as γ-ketopentanoic acid or 4-oxopentanoic acid, is a polyfunctional organic acid containing carbonyl, α-hydrogen, and carboxyl groups. It is also an important platform compound derived from biomass conversion. Its chemical formula is usually written as:

C5H8O3 (CAS No.: 123-76-2, molecular weight approximately 116.12, EINECS No.: 204-649-2)

It is a white, flaky or leaf-like crystal at room temperature, melting into a pale yellow liquid at approximately 33-35°C. Its boiling point is approximately 245°C, relative density is approximately 1.13, and flash point is approximately 137.8°C. It is readily soluble in water, ethanol, and ether. Lipylpropionic acid is produced by the hydrolysis of biomass such as sugars, starch, and cellulose. It is listed by the U.S. Department of Energy as one of the 12 major bio-based platform compounds, possessing renewable and biodegradable green properties.

From the molecular framework point of view, levulinic acid is an example of γ-keto acids containing a carboxyl group (-COOH) and a ketone carbonyl group (C=O). It shows a rich chemical reactivity: the carboxyl group can form salts and esters, the carbonyl group can be hydrogenated and condensed, and the α-hydrogen can participate in many reactions. The “multifunctional group” characteristic allows for the synthesis of ester plasticisers, the reduction of ester plasticisers to γ-valerolactone by hydrogenation, and the production of green chemicals such as bisphenol acid via condensation. This is the structural basis for its widespread use as a bio-based platform compound.

Chemical stability of levulinic acid is high and it is no appreciable decomposition during distillation at normal pressure. Prolonged heating causes it to lose water and form unsaturated $\gamma$-lactones. It can cause irritation to skin and eyes. Store in a dry, tightly-closed container. Keep away from heat, sparks and flame.

Industrial grade levulinic acid is a product mainly for industrial production. The general purity is more than 98%. Compared to reagent-grade and other specifications, industrial-grade products place greater emphasis on the following indicators:

Main content

Purity directly affects the downstream synthesis yield and product quality; industrial grade generally requires a main content of over 98%.

Moisture

Excessive moisture content can affect reactions such as esterification and hydrogenation, and must be kept at a low level.

Color

The color should be light (light yellow); abnormal color often indicates impurities or oxidation.

Iron content

Metallic impurities such as iron can affect the catalytic reaction and product color, and must be kept at low levels.

Melting point and boiling range

Melting point (33~35℃) and boiling range are common indicators for judging purity, and they must meet the specified range.

II. What are the uses of industrial-grade Levulinic acid?

1. Environmentally friendly plasticizers

Acetylpropionates (such as butyl acetylpropionate and octyl acetylpropionate) are green and environmentally friendly plasticizers that are biodegradable and have low toxicity. They are used to plasticize plastics, rubber and coatings and are potential alternatives to traditional phthalate plasticizers.

2. Bisphenolic acids and polymer monomers

Bisphenolic acid can be prepared by condensing acetylpropionic acid with phenol. Bisphenolic acid is a new type of green and environmentally friendly polymer synthesis monomer that can replace bisphenol A, which has health risks, and can be used to synthesize green polymer materials such as epoxy resins and polycarbonates.

3. γ-Valactone and Green Solvent

Hydrogenation of levulinic acid can produce γ-valerol (GVL), which is a high-performance green solvent and biofuel precursor that can replace some petroleum-based solvents and is also an intermediate in the synthesis of fine chemicals.

4. Solvents and textile auxiliaries

Acetylacetic acid is an excellent solvent used in the textile printing and dyeing industry as a solvent for nitrocellulose, cellulose ethers, synthetic resins and natural resins. It is also used as a textile auxiliary to improve fiber processing performance.

5. Pesticides and rust inhibitors

Acetylacetic acid is used as a synthetic intermediate for pesticides and insect repellents, and can also be used as a metal rust inhibitor, with applications in agrochemicals and metal protection.

6. Other Applications

Its applications continue to expand, including ethylation and carbonylation reagents in organic synthesis, cosmetic ingredients, and tobacco processing aids.

Summarize

Levulinic acid, also known as levulinic acid (γ-ketovalerate), is a white, flaky crystalline polyfunctional organic acid derived from biomass. It is listed by the U.S. Department of Energy as one of the 12 major bio-based platform compounds, possessing renewable and biodegradable green properties. In daily life, we indirectly come into contact with it through calcium supplements, plastic products, textiles, biofuels and green solvents, and daily chemical products.
