1. Product Overview

Calcium bromide (calcium dibromide; CaBr₂, CAS 7789-41-5) is a white, hygroscopic crystalline salt with the highest water solubility of the common calcium halides. In the oil and gas industry it is the key salt of high-density clear brines: its exceptional solubility (156 g per 100 g water at 25 °C, rising to about 75 wt% hot) lets operators build dense, solids-free drilling, completion, workover and packing fluids that control high wellbore pressures without formation damage. The same brine chemistry supports a second major role — injection into coal-fired power plant flue gas to oxidize elemental mercury for capture. Calcium bromide also serves in photography (dry plates and light-sensitive papers), fire-extinguishing and flame-retardant formulations, ammonium bromide manufacture, wood preservation and sizing compounds. It is supplied as anhydrous powder, hexahydrate crystals or ready-to-use clear brine

Core value propositions:

●     High-Density Clear Brine Salt (Core Application): solids-free drilling, completion, workover and packing fluids for wellbore pressure control;

●     Mercury Emission Control: proven flue-gas mercury oxidation aid for power generation and incineration;

●     Extreme Water Solubility: up to ≈ 75 wt% in hot water — density tunable over a wide range;

3. Chemistry & Structure

Calcium bromide is the ionic calcium salt of hydrobromic acid. The anhydrous salt crystallizes in orthorhombic or rhombohedral form, melts at about 730–742 °C and boils near 1815 °C, with a density of about 3.38 g/cm³. It is strongly deliquescent — the crystals absorb atmospheric moisture and can dissolve into their own water of hydration — and slowly turn yellow on prolonged air exposure. Its defining property is extreme water solubility: about 156 g dissolves in 100 g of water at 25 °C and the solubility climbs with temperature to roughly 75 wt%, far exceeding the other common calcium halides. This makes aqueous calcium bromide a dense, clear liquid (typical brines reach specific gravities well above 1.7) with no suspended solids — exactly what high-pressure oilfield wellbore fluids require. It is also produced as the hexahydrate CaBr₂·6H₂O, a lower-melting hydrate form used for transport and blending.

8. FAQ

Q1: What is calcium bromide used for?

Calcium bromide's major use is in high-density clear drilling, completion, workover and packing fluids for oil and gas wells — its extreme water solubility produces dense, solids-free brines that control wellbore pressure without formation damage. It is also injected into coal-fired power plant flue gas to control mercury emissions, and it serves in photography (dry plates, light-sensitive papers), fire-extinguishing and flame-retardant compositions, ammonium bromide manufacture, wood preservation, sizing compounds, freezing mixtures and hydraulic fluids.

Q2: Is calcium bromide safe to handle?

Calcium bromide is classified as causing serious eye damage (GHS H318) and can also irritate skin and the respiratory tract as a dust. Handle with chemical goggles, protective gloves and dust control; in case of eye contact rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention. It is a stable, non-flammable salt, but it is strongly hygroscopic and should be kept dry and away from strong acids. Follow the SDS for full handling guidance.

Q3: Why is calcium bromide used in drilling fluids?

Because of its extreme water solubility and high solution density. A calcium bromide brine can reach specific gravities far above 1.7 while remaining completely clear — no suspended solids. That combination is exactly what high-pressure wellbores need: the dense fluid counterbalances formation pressure, and the absence of solids avoids plugging the reservoir. It is typically blended with calcium chloride or zinc bromide to fine-tune density and crystallization temperature, and it is used for drilling, completion, workover and packing fluids alike.

Q4: What is the difference between the anhydrous, hexahydrate and liquid brine forms?

Anhydrous calcium bromide (CaBr₂) is the pure salt — a white hygroscopic powder that melts near 730–742 °C — best for dry blending and custom brine preparation. The hexahydrate (CaBr₂·6H₂O) carries water of crystallization, melts much lower (around 38 °C) and is easier to handle in humid climates. The 52–53% liquid brine is the ready-to-use field form, shipped in totes or tanks and directly pumpable into the well — the practical choice when logistics allow. Choose by application: powder/hexahydrate for formulation flexibility, brine for direct use.
