What is zinc phosphate? What are its industrial applications?

1. What is Zinc phosphate?

Zinc phosphate also called zinc phosphate or zinc white phosphate is the orthophosphate of zinc. It is one of the inorganic phosphate compounds and its chemical formula is usually written as:

Zn3(PO4)2 (CAS No.: 7779-90-0, molecular weight of anhydrous form about 386.11; industrial grade is usually the dihydrate Zn3(PO4)2·2H2O, molecular weight about 422.08, theoretical zinc content 46.46%

It is a colorless orthorhombic crystal or white microcrystalline powder at room temperature. It is non-toxic, odorless, has a density of about 3.998 g/cm3 and a melting point of about 900℃. It is hardly soluble in water soluble in inorganic acid ammonia and ammonium salt solutions insoluble in ethanol. Zinc phosphate is a natural mineral called “paraphosphite” which has two crystal types, α-type and β-type.

Zinc phosphate is made up of zinc ions (Zn2+) and phosphate ions (PO4³-) in composition. In anti-rust coatings it gradually hydrolyzes to release phosphate ions which react with the steel substrate to form an insoluble iron phosphate passivation film. Meanwhile, zinc ions form a protective complex, inhibiting electrochemical corrosion by a dual mechanism, that is, this “slow-release film-forming” mechanism makes zinc the most important non-toxic anti-rust pigment to replace traditional lead- and chromium-containing anti-rust pigments, and also forms the functional basis for the large-scale application of zinc in the anti-corrosion coating industry.

Zinc phosphate is chemically stable and nontoxic and is practically insoluble in water and ethanol but soluble in inorganic acids, ammonia, and solutions of ammonium salts. It is the most important and widely used phosphate rust-preventive pigment, and can be used to replace traditional rust-preventive pigments containing lead and chromium. Store in a dry, tightly closed container.

Industrial grade zinc phosphate refers to rust preventive pigment products that are mainly used for industrial production. Compared with reagent grade products, industrial grade products pay more attention to the following indicators:

Main content (zinc content)

Zinc content directly affects rust prevention performance and coating formulation.

Fineness

Fineness (particle size) affects pigment dispersibility and coating density, and the mesh size needs to be controlled according to the application of the coating.

Moisture

Excessive moisture content can affect the grinding and storage stability of coatings and must be kept at a low level.

Water-soluble substances

The content of water-soluble substances affects the water resistance and anti-corrosion performance of anti-rust paint and must be strictly controlled.

pH

pH reflects the acidity or alkalinity of the product, affecting the stability and rust prevention effect of the coating system, and must meet the specifications.

II. What are the uses of industrial-grade Zinc phosphate?

1. Rust-preventing pigments (core application)

Znc phosphate is the most important and widely used phosphate corrosion-inhibiting pigment. It forms a passivation film on the steel surface by a dual mechanism of slow release of phosphate and zinc ions to inhibit electrochemical corrosion. It is commonly used in oil and water based anti-corrosion primers and topcoats, and is applied to heavy duty anti-corrosion coatings for bridges, automobiles, ships, containers and steel structures. It can be used as an alternative to conventional lead-chromium anti-corrosion pigments.

2. Substrate for coating

Zinc phosphate is used as a base material and pigment component in phenolic, epoxy and alkyd coatings. It is compatible well with resin systems, and may improve the adhesion and anti-corrosion properties of coatings. It is used in industrial anti-corrosion coatings, powder coatings.

3. Metal phosphatization treatment

Zinc phosphate is one of the main components of metal phosphating solutions. It is used for the phosphating treatment of metal surfaces such as steel to form a dense zinc phosphate phosphating film, improving the coating adhesion and corrosion resistance. It is widely used in pre-treatment for coating for automobiles, home appliances and hardware parts.

4. Flame retardants

Zinc phosphate can be utilized as a flame retardant for chlorinated rubber and organic polymer materials. It is used in flame retardant coatings, flame retardant plastics and flame retardant rubber products and synergizes with halogenated flame retardant systems.

5. Ceramics and glass additives

Zinc phosphate is used as an additive for glass and ceramics to improve the properties of glass melting and ceramic glazes . It is employed in the manufacturing of specialty glass and ceramic products .

6. Materials for dentistry

Zinc phosphate cement is a conventional dental luting agent used for fillings, cementation of crowns and tooth restorations. Dental materials for restorative treatments in dental clinics include zinc phosphate.

7. Other Applications

Its application areas, including trace element zinc fertilizers and chemical reagents, are constantly expanding.

Summarize

Zinc phosphate, also known as zinc phosphate (zinc phosphate white), is a white crystalline powder of inorganic phosphate. It is non-toxic and almost insoluble in water. With its dual rust-preventing mechanism of slow-release phosphate and zinc ions, it is the most important non-toxic rust-preventing pigment to replace lead- and chromium-containing pigments. In daily life, we indirectly come into contact with it through metal rust-preventing coatings, dental materials, metal phosphated parts, zinc fertilizers, and flame-retardant products. In industry, industrial-grade zinc phosphate is widely used as a rust-preventing pigment (core), coating base material, metal phosphating solution component, flame retardant for polymer materials, and glass and ceramic additives. It is an important phosphate pigment connecting "daily use" with "anti-corrosion coatings, metal processing, and flame-retardant materials."
