tert-Butyl acetate (TBAC) is an ester compound formed by the esterification of acetic acid and tert-butanol. It is also the fourth isomer of butyl acetate. Its chemical formula is usually written as:
C6H12O2 (CAS No.: 540-88-5, molecular weight approximately 116.16, EC No.: 208-760-7, UN No.: 1123)
It is a colorless and transparent liquid at room temperature, with a fruity aroma similar to camphor or blueberries. Its density is about 0.866 g/cm³, boiling point is about 98℃, melting point is about -62℃, flash point is about 4.4℃ (closed cup, extremely flammable), ignition temperature is about 421℃, slightly soluble in water (about 0.8% at 20℃), and miscible with most organic solvents such as ethers and alcohols.
From a molecular structure perspective, tert-butyl acetate is composed of acetate groups (CH3COO-) and tert-butyl groups ((CH3)3C-). The tribranched structure of the tert-butyl group endows it with low viscosity, rapid evaporation, and good solubility. Its evaporation rate and solubility are similar to those of methyl ethyl ketone and methyl isobutyl ketone. At the same time, it has low toxicity and is a recognized environmentally friendly solvent that can replace many harmful air pollutants (HAPs) and volatile organic solvents (VOCs), including toluene, xylene, esters, ketones, and hydrocarbons. This is the "low toxicity, fast drying and strong solubility" which is the basis of wide application of it in the industrial field, such as coatings, printing ink, adhesives and cleaning.
Chemically, tert-butyl acetate is highly flammable, with a flash point of only about 4.4°C. Its vapour can form explosive mixtures with air so must be kept away from sources of ignition. It irritates eyes and skin and must be protected in case of prolonged contact. Store in a sealed, fire-proof and well-ventilated place away from sources of ignition & heat.
Industrial grade tert-butyl acetate refers to the products used for industrial production, and the purity is generally above 99%. Industrial products pay attention to the following indicators more than reagent grade and other specifications:
purity
Purity directly affects solvent performance and the quality of downstream products. Industrial grade solvents usually have a main content of 99% or more.
Moisture
The moisture content should be kept low, as it will affect the drying performance and storage stability of the solvent.
acid value
The acid value, which reflects the amount of free acetic acid, is important for product stability and downstream applications and must be low.
Colour
The oil should be clear and colourless . Abnormal colour usually indicates deterioration or impurities .
Density and boiling range
Density (0.866) and boiling range are common purity and quality indicators, and must meet specs.
tert-butyl acetate is a well-known environmentally friendly coating solvent that can replace hazardous solvents such as toluene and xylene. It can be used in 2K polyurethane, alkyd resin, acrylic resin, nitrocellulose and epoxy coating systems, as well as automotive refinish paint, wood paint, aviation paint and baking paint, helping coatings meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations.
It is used as solvent for solvent based printing inks. tert-Butyl acetate It has fast drying and good dissolving properties to dissolve resins and adjust drying speed. It is used for the production of packaging printing and industrial inks.
tert-Butyl acetate is used as a solvent component in adhesives to aid in the dissolution of resins, to modify viscosity and drying characteristics, and is used in the manufacture of industrial adhesives and sealants.
tert-butyl acetate is used as a component of industrial cleaners and degreasers to help remove oil and contaminants. It is also used for cleaning electronic components and precision parts, replacing traditional harmful cleaning solvents due to its low toxicity and environmentally friendly properties.
tert-butyl acetate is an excellent solvent for resins such as nitrocellulose and is used in the formulation of coatings, inks and paints to help improve leveling and film-forming properties.
tert-butyl acetate is used as a solvent for chemical additives such as gasoline anti-vibration agents, and also as an auxiliary solvent in chemical production, serving the fine chemical industry.
tert-butyl acetate can be used in coating systems such as automotive refinish paints and wood coatings, and the production chain of automotive repair and wood coating may indirectly involve it.
Its applications, including extractants and laboratory and research solvents, continue to expand.
Tert-Butyl acetate (TBAC) is a colourless transparent ester liquid, with a fruity aroma like camphor or blueberry. It boils at 98°C and is volatile with a flash point of 4.4°C (very flammable). It is a well-known environmentally friendly solvent that can replace the use of toxic solvents such as toluene and xylene. In our daily life we meet it indirectly in eco-friendly coatings, printing inks, adhesives, industrial and electronic cleaning, automotive repair paints and educational experiments. In industry, industrial grade tert-butyl acetate is widely used as a core solvent in environmentally friendly coatings, printing inks, adhesives, industrial cleaning agents, nitrocellulose and resins, and chemical additives. It is an important green and environmentally friendly solvent to bridge “daily use” and “coatings, inks and cleaning”.
