Ferrous sulfate heptahydrate CAS 7782-63-0

Application Scenarios:

Industrial Grade

Industrial Wastewater Flocculation and Phosphorus Removal: In wastewater treatment plants, ferrous sulfate heptahydrate is the most commonly used inorganic polymeric flocculant. When dissolved in water, the resulting iron ions rapidly hydrolyze, forming highly adsorbent ferric hydroxide colloids that neutralize and precipitate suspended solids in the wastewater. Simultaneously, it reacts with soluble phosphates in the wastewater to form insoluble ferric phosphate precipitates, thus achieving highly effective phosphorus removal.

Reduction of Hexavalent Chromium in Electroplating and Dyeing Wastewater: For highly toxic hexavalent chromium in wastewater from industries such as electroplating and leather tanning, ferrous sulfate heptahydrate utilizes its strong reducing properties to reduce hexavalent chromium to a much less toxic form under acidic conditions.

Cement Chromium Reduction Agent: Adding an appropriate amount of industrial-grade ferrous sulfate heptahydrate to cement production can reduce trace amounts of harmful water-soluble hexavalent chromium in cement to safe levels, thus preventing workers from developing "cement skin disease" upon contact with wet cement.

Reuse of Titanium Dioxide Byproducts: Industrially, much ferrous sulfate heptahydrate exists as a byproduct of titanium dioxide production using the sulfuric acid process, and is widely used in the manufacture of iron oxide red pigment, magnetic materials, and catalysts.

Agricultural Grade

Prevention of Plant Chlorosis: Iron is an indispensable cofactor for plant chlorophyll synthesis. Plants that prefer acidic soils (such as gardenias, jasmine, azaleas, money trees, and hydrangeas) are highly susceptible to yellowing and wilting of new leaves due to iron deficiency in northern regions or alkaline soils. Regular application of agricultural-grade ferrous sulfate heptahydrate (commonly known as "black alum fertilizer") can rapidly replenish iron, promote chlorophyll synthesis, and restore the deep green color of leaves.

Regulating soil pH: Ferrous sulfate solution is acidic; long-term, appropriate application can gradually improve alkaline soil, regulate pH, and create an environment suitable for acid-loving plants.

Fruit tree disease prevention and moss removal: It is commonly used as a pesticide in orchards to control wheat smut, apple and pear scab, and fruit tree rot; spraying it on damp surfaces can also effectively remove moss.

Feed Grade

Iron supplement in compound feed: Iron is essential for the synthesis of hemoglobin, myoglobin, and various cytochrome enzymes in animals. Feed-grade ferrous sulfate heptahydrate is widely added to complete compound feeds for pigs, poultry, cattle, and sheep. Especially for suckling piglets and sows, adding ferrous sulfate heptahydrate can significantly prevent iron deficiency anemia, improve piglet survival rate and disease resistance, and give livestock a healthy, shiny coat.

Food Grade

Food Fortifier: Used as an iron source in some iron-fortified flours, fortified cereals, and solid beverages. However, due to its metallic rusty taste and tendency to oxidize and discolor, it is gradually being replaced in high-end foods by ferrous lactate, sodium iron EDTA, and other additives.
