Dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether (also known as dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether, propylene glycol dimethyl ether, bis(methoxypropyl) ether, or DPDM, DMM, DPGDME, PROGLYDE DMM) is a bifunctional ether solvent obtained by etherifying both hydroxyl groups of dipropylene glycol with methyl groups. Its chemical formula is usually written as:
C8H18O3 (molecular weight approximately 162.23, structural formula CH3OCH(CH3)CH2OCH(CH3)CH2OCH3, CAS number: 111109-77-4)
It is a colorless, transparent liquid at room temperature with a faint ether-like odor. It is partially miscible with water (approximately 35% solubility in water at 25°C) and also miscible with most organic solvents. Its boiling point is approximately 175°C, flash point 65°C, density approximately 0.903 g/cm³ (at 20°C), freezing point extremely low (approximately -80°C), and evaporation rate is low (approximately 0.13 relative to n-butyl acetate). It is a slow-volatile solvent, and storage at temperatures below 30°C is recommended.
From a molecular structure perspective, DPDM molecules consist of two propoxy segments and three ether bonds, with a methoxy group (-OCH3) at each end, and no hydroxyl groups. This "fully etherified" structure makes it a unique aprotic solvent—distinct among propylene glycol ethers: because it lacks hydroxyl functional groups, it does not react with active hydrogen systems and exhibits excellent chemical stability. DPDM is a solvent that combines solubility and safety because of its excellent solubility, low surface tension (about 26.3 dynes per centimetre in a 1% aqueous solution) and moderate evaporation rate.
Industrial-grade DPDM is a product of 99% purity or higher used in industry, for example in coatings, electronics, cleaning agents and agrochemicals. Compared with reagent-grade DPDM, the following indicators are paid more attention to in industrial-grade products:
Usually the purity required is 99% or more than that and the content will determine the solubility and dosage in the formulation.
The moisture content affects the performance of the solvent and its stability in storage, and very strict control is necessary.
Colour of Downstream Products The Colour of Downstream Products influences the Appearance of Downstream Products and should be maintained within the Indicated Range.
This is indicative of free acid or alkali content; too high levels can impact the stability of the formulation and downstream applications.
The components must be checked for purity and consistency with the product within the specified range.
Quality is checked on arrival by standard physicochemical indicators.
Ether solvents may form peroxides if left for a long time and this must be kept within safe limits.
Industrial-grade DPDM, with its unique combination of "non-proton + strong solubility + slow volatility", is widely used in coatings, electronics, cleaning and agrochemical fields.
DPDM is a classic co-solvent for waterborne polyurethane coatings. Waterborne polyurethane systems are proton-sensitive, and common alcohol ether solvents react with isocyanate groups. DPDM, however, has no hydroxyl groups and does not interfere with the reaction, making it one of the preferred solvents for proton-sensitive systems. It is also used as a film-forming aid and coagulant in latex paints, wood coatings, automotive paints, and industrial paints. Its slow volatility and excellent surface tension-reducing ability help to achieve uniform film formation and improve leveling and gloss.
DPDM can be used to replace N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) for cleaning in the electronics industry. It is used for cleaning flux residues from PCB circuit boards, cleaning flux and degreasing electronic components. It balances the requirements for cleaning power and environmental protection and offers a green cleaning solution for the electronics manufacturing industry.
It serves as a solvent and cosolvent in household cleaners (such as oil stain removers and glass cleaners) and industrial cleaning agents. It encourages the disintegration of grease and dirt, lowers surface tension, increases cleaning efficiency and is compatible with a variety of surfactant systems.
DPDM is an aprotic inert solvent that can be used as an azeotroping solvent in esterification reactions to help dehydrate the reaction and improve the conversion rate. It is also used in the synthesis of polyurethanes as a reaction medium and diluent.
DPDM is used as a solvent in the production process of solvent-based resins (e.g., alkyd resins and acrylic resins) to control the viscosity of the polymerisation system and improve resin properties.
DPDM, as a solvent carrier of textile printing and dyeing auxiliaries, can make auxiliaries disperse and penetrate evenly, which can serve the textile dyeing and finishing industry.
DPDM is used as a solvent carrier in the fragrance and flavour industry to help fragrance components in their stable dissolution. It may be indirectly implicated in the fragrance formulations of the fragrances and daily chemical products we use.
With increasingly stringent regulations on green solvents, the application scope of industrial-grade DPDM continues to expand, including in areas such as paint remover formulations and brake fluid and hydraulic fluid component extensions.
Dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether (DPDM, C8H18O3, CAS No. 111109-77-4) is an aprotic ether solvent produced by the complete etherification of dipropylene glycol. At room temperature it is a clear, colourless liquid, with a boiling point of about 175 °C and a flash point of 65 °C. It has low evaporation rate, good dissolving power, chemical stability and low toxicity. It is found in our daily lives as paints, electronic products, cleaning products, automotive coatings, textiles and fragrances. In industry, DPDM is widely used as a co-solvent and film-forming aid in waterborne polyurethane coatings, in electronic industrial cleaning (as a substitute for NMP), in cleaning and detergent products, as an adjuvant in pesticide formulations, as a solvent in organic production reactions, and in resins and textile auxiliaries. It is a green solvent with broad applicability linking “green solvents” to “coatings, electronics, cleaning and agrochemicals”.
