Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a water-soluble, nonionic polymer consisting of N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) monomers. It is the most common type of N-vinylamide polymers. The chemical formula is normally written as:
(C6H9NO)n (CAS No. 9003-39-8)
At room temperature it is a white to milky white hygroscopic powder, odorless or almost odorless, soluble in water and in most organic solvents such as ethanol and chloroform, but insoluble in non-polar solvents such as ethers and hydrocarbons. PVP is divided into different grades, such as K15, K25, K30, and K90, based on the K value (which refers to molecular weight), with average molecular weights from several thousand to millions.
From the molecular framework point of view, PVP molecules are typical amphiphilic polymers, possessing both hydrophilic amide groups and lipophilic pyrrolidone rings. This structure provides them with colloidal protection, ability to form a film, adhesiveness, hygroscopicity, solubilizing and coagulating effects, and ability to complex with compounds such as iodine. It is water soluble , compatible with hydrophobic materials and forms transparent films on surfaces . The chemical basis for the wide application of PVP in the cosmetic, food and industrial fields is this multi-functional combination of “amphiphilic + film-forming + complexing”.
PVP is chemically stable and non toxic. It forms a transparent and water-soluble film, has excellent adhesion to glass, metal and plastic surfaces and is compatible with most inorganic acid salts and various resins. It can also complex with iodine to make povidone iodine (PVP-I). Store in a dry, sealed container to prevent clumping and moisture absorption.
Industrial-grade polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is understood as products used mainly for industrial production supplied in the form of powders and aqueous solutions of various concentrations. These indicators are more emphasized for industrial-grade products than for pharmaceutical-grade (pharmaceutical excipients):
The K value is used to determine the molecular weight grade and application direction (low K value is used for dispersion and solubilization, high K value is used for film formation and thickening) and the type should be selected according to the application.
Moisture content of powder products should be controlled. For solution products, the effective ingredients are calculated according to solid content, which directly influences the dosage and process.
The residual content of NVP monomer is an important index for quality control and should be kept at low levels.
The ash content is a measure of the impurity content which impacts the quality of downstream products and has to meet the specifications.
The pH is important for the stability of the formula and the color is important for the quality of the product and both must meet the specification.
It is used as a primary film-forming component in hairspray, mousse and other styling products. Its film forming properties and water solubility make it washable and good for hair styling. It is also used as a film-forming agent and dispersing stabilizer in skin care and sun protection products, and it is one of the most widely used polymer raw materials in the daily chemical industry.
PVP adheres extremely well to glass, metal and plastic surfaces. It is widely used in various adhesive formulations, as a dispersant and thickener in coatings and emulsions, due to its hydrophilicity, dispersion stability and thickening properties.
PVP is used as a surface coating agent and dispersant for printing inks and pigments, which helps the pigments to disperse evenly and prevents precipitation and agglomeration. It is used in the production of printing inks, ink jet inks and pigment pastes.
PVP is used as a dispersant, thickening and leveling agent in textile printing and dyeing, which can improve the uniformity of dyeing. It is also used in fabric finishing for better hand feel and antistatic properties
The PVP and its derivatives are used as anti-redeposition agents in detergents so as to preclude dirt washed off from clothes from re-sticking to clothes, thus improving washing performance. They are used in the formulation of laundry powders and detergents.
PVP is a dispersant of lithium-ion battery electrode materials. It can make the active materials and conductive agents (such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, etc.) disperse evenly and improve the stability of the slurry and the performance of the battery. It is an important additive of new energy battery materials.
PVP is used as a dispersant and thickener in pesticide formulations, which helps to improve the pesticide’s suspension stability and increase its efficacy. Food-grade PVP is used as a clarifying agent and stabilizer in beer and wine, and is also used in the food and beverage industry.
Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a white, hygroscopic, nonionic, water soluble polymer. It is a versatile polymer used in daily chemicals, food, and industry due to its amphiphilic, film-forming, adhesive, and complexing properties. In everyday life we encounter it indirectly in disinfectant products, cosmetics, beer and wine, detergents, lithium batteries and printing coatings. Industrial-grade PVP is widely used in the industry as a film-forming agent in cosmetics, as an adhesive and coating additive, as an ink and pigment dispersant, as a textile printing and dyeing auxiliary, as a detergent anti-redeposition agent, as a dispersant for lithium batteries’ electrodes, and as a pesticide and food-processing aid. It is an important water soluble polymer linking daily use with daily chemicals and new energy.
