It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. It is mainly used in the fields of chemical synthesis and materials science, such as dienophiles in the Diels-Alder reaction, and also in the development of photochemical 3D printing substrates and the study of polymer properties.
